Meeting of the ELC General Synod Makes Changes to Constitution

Moscow
“2016 is the 440th year of Lutheranism in Russia. A lot has happened in that time, but the voice of the Word of the Lord has continued to be sounded. 2016 has been announced as the year of the family in accordance with the year's Bible verse - 'As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.' (Isa. 66.13a). The Gospel describes a rupture in family life as a tragedy.”  These words come from the sermon of Archbishop Dietrich Brauer during opening worship for the synod.
The decisions of the General Synod (made up of representatives of the two churches that make up the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Russia) were made on April 22nd in St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Moscow; they were related primarily to changes in the church's constitution.

20 delegates voted mostly unanimously for changes related to the structure of the ELCR the make up of the General Consistory, of the new legal name of the Theological Seminar and of the Church, of using the Luther Rose and the sculpture of an angel with a cross as official symbols of the church. Concerning the latter, which stands above Petrikirche in St. Petersburg, this work of art is being restored with the help of the government of St. Petersburg, and it should be finished in October 2016.  Among other decisions made by the General Synod were ones related to using and maintaining property.
At the conclusion of the synod Bishop Otto Schaude gave the blessing and wished all in attendance that they be light to the world. The beautiful candles with images of the Moscow cathedral given to participants will serve to remind them of their calling and of their unity with their brothers and sisters in Christ.
